Troy's Burgers in Orange

Troy's Burgers
404 E. Lincoln Ave
Orange, CA 92865

When I crave a breakfast burrito there is only one place to go and that's Troy's Burgers in Orange. I have been going to Troy's ever since I discovered the place many years ago. It's one of those hole in wall joints that you might pass by but the breakfast burritos are worth stopping by and giving Troy's a try. I woke early on a Saturday morning and made the trek over there to grab some burritos for the family. I ordered three burritos and one breakfast sandwich. The meal was 23 bucks even.

I order a bacon and egg sandwich for my daughter because I was afraid she would not eat the burrito. The sandwich was a perfect choice for her because she simply took it apart and ate the bacon, eggs and toast separately. She gobbled down what she could and she said it was good and filling.

The breakfast burrito at Troy's Burger is loaded with hash browns, eggs, cheese, salsa and your choice of bacon, sausage, ham or any combination of the three. I ordered ours with bacon and ham, no salsa. The hash browns are cooked with a crispy outside and soft potato inside. The three eggs are scrambled and layered on top of the potatoes, the bacon, ham and cheese are placed in the center and the whole thing is rolled up in the tortilla. The whole burrito is one giant rolled up breakfast plate of deliciousness.
I honestly have not been to Troy's Burgers for anything but the breakfast burritos, but I can tell you if you enjoy breakfast burritos then Troy's is a must try stop. I am always willing to wake up early and make a trip to Troy's if it means I will soon be enjoying one of these yummy breakfast burritos!

Katella Family Grill is family food for all

1325 West Katella Avenue
Orange, CA 92867

When the family can not decide what to eat we like to go a family style restaurant that has a good variety of food that allows each person to find something they want. A great restaurant for this is Katella Family Grill. The menu has enough to choose from that everyone in my family can find something they want to eat. We ended up at Katella Family Grill a few nights ago. My daughter ordered her usual hamburger, my son got a chicken breast sandwich, my wife got fried chicken and I got pork chops. With drinks and a tip the whole meal was $52.

My daughter ate her burger and fries and she said the hamburger was good and the fries were yummy. My son chowed down on his sandwich and said it was tasty. He did not seem overly excited about the food but he did say that he did enjoy his meal.

My wife said the fried chicken was moist. The skin was crispy and had good flavor. She said she enjoyed the chicken better then the chicken you can get in a bucket. She also said the baked beans were really good. The meal was half a chicken and two sides.

I decided to get pork chops with a baked potato and steamed green beans. I started with a fork full of green beans which were loaded with slivered almonds. They were cooked nice and still had a of snap to them when I bit into them. My baked potato was fluffy and buttery, just the way I like it. The pork chops were grilled but did not have any spice on them. So they were simple yet good. The stuffing the chops rested on was also good. This was a good meal that left me full but not stuffed.

Katella Family Grill is a restaurant that we go to often because it is good food at a reasonable price. When the family goes there we know everyone will be able to find something they want to eat and it won't cost me an arm and a leg. The food is always good but nothing I'd rave over. If you happen to be in the area and need a good meal then Katella Family Grill will deliver.

Is Famous Dave's BBQ really famous?

BBQ Shack
2214 North Tustin St., Ste. B
Orange, CA 92865

My wife has been telling me about Famous Dave's BBQ for a few weeks now and I have not been to keen on the idea. The last BBQ joint my wife recommended was awful and expensive. We were headed to Orange that night anyway so I thought we might as well check it out. When we first walked into Famous Dave's I could smell the smoke from the smokers, it's such an awesome smell. The first thing you do is place your order, then grab a pig marker with a number on it and have a seat. When the food is ready it is brought to your table. Each table has its own roll of paper towels and set of BBQ sauces. My daughter ordered the kids cheese burger, my son got the BBQ chicken sandwich, my wife and I both got a two item combo. With drinks this whole meal was about $49.

The kids cheeseburger my daughter ordered did not last long. She keep saying how delicious the burger was. It did look like a good burger. The melted cheese covered the patty. It was served plain since it was a kids burger. The fries that came with the burger were good, crisp on the outside a soft on the inside. My son's BBQ chicken sandwich was loaded with hand-pulled chicken that was coated with BBQ sauce and covered in melted jack cheese. I had try this sandwich for myself. The chicken was juicy and the BBQ sauce was just right, not so much that all you could taste was sauce. This sandwich is something I will have to order myself sometime.

My wife got rib tips and BBQ chicken for her two items. She picked BBQ beans for her side. The meal comes with corn on the cob and corn bread. My wife started with the rib tips and her fingers were quickly covered in BBQ sauce. She said the rib tips were amazingly good. My wife then tried the chicken and said the chicken had a nice spice rub and the BBQ sauce was really good. She kept telling me "I told you so".

My two items were rib tips and chopped pork. I too got BBQ beans along with corn on the cob and corn bread. I started with my rib tips. I have never had rib tips before but have heard about them from watching a lot of Food Network. These rib tips were smokey and full of flavor from the spice rub. Each rib tip had a good amount of meat that I was able to eat. I could pull some meat off the rib tips and see the smoke ring that was created during the cooking process. I then thought to try the BBQ beans. These beans had bits of bacon and pulled meat in the sauce. The BBQ flavor of these beans was off the hook good. The pulled pork was served on a piece of toasted bread and covered in BBQ sauce. The pork was tender and moist. The smoke from the pork was just the right amount and the BBQ sauce was not so overpowering that you could not taste the pork. The corn bread had crisp top with a nice honey coating.

Famous Dave's BBQ Shack exceeded my expectations. I walked in not expecting much but walked out stuffed and jonesing for more. The quality of the food was excellent and the service was super nice. I felt the price was average for BBQ but the flavor was the best out of any BBQ joint I have been to so far. If you are craving some good BBQ then take the trip to Famous Dave's and you will not be disappointed.

Tom's Place is good quick grub

Tom's Place
221 W. Orangethorpe
Placentia, CA 92870

So the family and I found ourselves in Placentia over the weekend and we drove by a restaurant called Tom's Place. I have eaten at Tom's Place many times in the past but had not been there in years. My son said lets stop, my wife agreed so we did. The menu at Tom's Place covered breakfast, lunch and dinner with a wide range of food to choose from. My daughter ordered the pancake plate, my son ordered the fish sandwich, my wife got a bacon cheese burger and I got a chicken breast sandwich. The sandwich and burger came in a combo with drinks and fries but I substituted fried zucchini. I ordered my daughter a drink for her and with all this the meal was $32.

My daughter said the pancakes were good and the eggs were yummy. She ate most of her plate but I had to help her out. The pancakes were firm on the outside and cake like on the inside. They were good and what I look for in a good pancake. My son's sandwich was two pieces of fried cod on a bed of lettuce with a couple slices of tomato. The sandwich looked good and my son said it was average, nothing special.

My wife's bacon cheese burger was totally loaded with bacon. In fact when she took her first bite I could hear the crunch of the crispy bacon. She said the burger was really good. The bun was soft and the meat was good. I did not try any of the burger so I will take her word for it.

My chicken sandwich appeared to be a large chicken breast that was butterflied and then cut in half. The chicken was thin but cooked well and had a nice seasoning to it. However the sandwich was mostly lettuce with a couple tomatoes and the thin chicken breast. It was good but nothing I would recommend. The fried zucchini however were really good. They had a crispy coating yet the zucchini was still firm., not soggy at all like some fried zucchini can get. The fried zucchini was probably the best thing I had on the table.

My overall impression of Tom's Place is that the food is good and fresh but nothing you can't get at any local burger joint. If you happen to be in Placentia and need some good food, quick then stop by Tom's Place but don't go out of your way.
